Ginny & Georgia, a new 10-part drama created by first-time writer Sarah Lampert, arrived on Netflix on 24 February.

It has already proved to be one of the streaming services most popular recent offerings.

The show follows the titular characters Georgia and her 15-year-old daughter Ginny Miller, who move to Massachusetts along with Georgia’s young son, Austin.

What is Ginny & Georgia about?

The children are used to moving around, as their mother seems to have spent years on the run from a dark and mysterious past., and angsty and awkward Ginny is wary of forging close emotional ties in New England in case they have to uproot again.

But while at school, the teenager nurtures an unspoken attraction to neighbour and classmate Marcus, and tentatively comes of age with support from three close gal pals.

However, it's not all carpool and Kombucha, as the unspoken horrors of Georgia's former life threatens her and her family; she will have to do anything and everything to protect her family.

Georgie is played by 31-year old American actress American actress Brianne Howey, known for her role as Reagan in The CW's Batwoman, and Kat Rance in the 2016 Fox television series, The Exorcist.

Daughter Ginny is played by Antonia Gentry, a newcomer who has appeared on Netflix a couple of times before: as Wendy in series Raising Dion, and as Jasmine in 2018 Netflix Original comedy movie, Candy Jar.

Diesel La Torraca plays her nine-year old brother Austin, a child actor who has previously appeared alongside Academy award winning actress Lupita Nyong'o in 2019’s Little Monsters.

Elsewhere on the cast, Jennifer Robertson (best known for her starring role as Jocelyn in the Emmy award winning sitcom, Schitt's Creek) plays the Millers' neighbour, Ellen.

Australian actor Felix Mallard – who has had roles in soap opera Neighbours and played Lucas Caravaggio in the Netflix series Locke & Key – plays Ginny’s love interest, Marcus.

Scott Porter (Blake Calamar in CBS' legal drama, The Good Wife) plays mayor Paul Randolph, and Canadian actor and comedian Raymond Ablack (Narcos, Shadowhunters) is local restaurant owner, Joe.

Is it any good?

At the time of writing, the series has a 68% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, who say that though Ginny & Georgia “can't quite pull off its tonally ambitious first season, it's at least entertaining to watch it try.”

In her three-star review for The Guardian, Lucy Mangan says the show should get an award for “Most Absurdly Entertaining Entertainment or Series Most Aptly Described as Desperate Housewives Meets Gilmore Girls”.

“Plot-wise, G&G delivers," she says. “Good trash-plotting is like a river in full spate. A lot rushes past you, it all feels Very Dramatic (although, unlike a river, mostly because of the way it is scored) and you feel like the source will never run dry.”

When can I watch it?

Ginny & Georgia debut on Netflix worldwide on Wednesday 24 February.

On February 26, Netflix released ‘Ginny & Georgia: The Afterparty’, a Netflix Special that takes a behind-the-scenes look at a series that is sure to be a hit.
