An American music producer was so wowed by the sounds of two Alwoodley jazz bands he snapped them up for his CD – not realising they were all school pupils.
From his studios in Washington DC, Alan Heaton from Burning Sky Records, put out an appeal on the net to professional musicians from across the world.

But when a entry was sent over from bands Out of the Blue and Jazz In 6ths, little did he realise they were students from The Grammar School at Leeds.

Now the school bands have each recorded songs for the tribute CD Take Refuge In Pleasure: The Songs of Roxy Music Revisited after beating off entries from professionals – and even cover bands.

Executive producer Alan said: "I am all about giving people a chance to make their musical dreams come true, but I wasn't 100 per cent certain what to expect from two school bands. Needless to say I was thrilled with the final result.

"These are outstanding accomplishments by both bands. We received track submissions from professional musicians from all over the world for this album, and a great many of those tracks did not make the cut."

The album will be released in September as a single disc, alongside a three-disc Deluxe & Delightful Edition.

Each release contains covers of Roxy Music songs as well as covers of Roxy Music "progeny": non-Roxy Music songs written by founding members Brian Eno, Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera.

Alan was first contacted by music teacher Oliver Whawell last year after he spotted an online posting about the album.

Oliver, himself a saxophonist and a massive fan of Roxy Music, has submitted a Phil Manzanera track, Frontera, with his own band The Strawberry Thieves which will also feature on the album.

He told the YEP: "This is the only school selected for the album – all the other bands were professional. We were absolutely delighted. I ran jazz bands at both schools before the merger and the jazz bands at the newly merged school have exploded with success, it's been fantastic."

Both bands have recorded songs written by the group's oboe and saxophone player Andy Mackay.

Out of the Blue, made up of 23 students from years eight to 12, performed War Brides on both releases, while the 11-piece Jazz In 6ths, a sixth form jazz ensemble, features on the Deluxe and Delightful Edition with their version of Skill and Sweat.

* The CDs will be available to buy from September 15. They can be pre-ordered now from: www.burningskyrecords.com
